Black Wall
Street Retold
Some places change the course of history. Others are remembered only in fragments. Black Wall Street Retold brings readers into one of America’s most remarkable communities, where determination, leadership, entrepreneurship, and vision transformed Greenwood into a symbol of extraordinary achievement before tragedy altered its future.
Built upon years of archival research, historical records, personal journeys, and overlooked family connections, this work offers a thoughtful perspective that reaches beyond familiar accounts. Rather than simply revisiting history, it invites readers to discover the people, decisions, and legacies that helped shape a community whose influence continues to echo across generations.
About The Author
A Lifetime of Service. A Passion for Preserving History.
History has always been more than a collection of dates for Steve Phillips; it is a record of lives, sacrifices, and achievements that deserve to be remembered. After retiring in 2020 following forty-eight years of military service and defense contract management, he turned his lifelong curiosity toward genealogy, expecting to document his family’s heritage. That journey uncovered an extraordinary connection to Tulsa’s Black Wall Street and revealed remarkable individuals whose contributions had been largely overlooked by history.
Determined to bring those stories into the light, Steve devoted years to researching archival records, historical newspapers, court documents, photographs, and family histories while traveling throughout Oklahoma to deepen his understanding of Greenwood’s legacy. The result is more than a historical account; it is a carefully researched tribute to resilience, leadership, and the people whose lives helped shape one of America’s most inspiring communities. Through thoughtful storytelling and documented research, Steve Phillips invites readers to experience history with greater depth, context, and appreciation.
